6 tips to create effective video-based learning

Do you know that 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual, and visuals are processed 60,000X faster in the brain than text? Illustration has always been a crucial factor for a successful learning. Because learners process information more quickly and engage in the course better with both visual and textual content.

In addition, the popularity of Youtube, Snapchat and Instagram is the most convincing showing of people’s growing love for videos. Instructional designers, indeed, are not staying out of this trend. The diverse abilities of video to be customized allows you to make video-based learning suitable for any type of learnings (online or offline) and fields (from science to art). 

1. Develop clear objective and outline

A consistent outline is the first thing to start with. It affects how you should build the video lesson to get the most effect out of it. Moreover, learners will be more engaged in your video if you can address a proper goal for them. To have a specific learning objective, you should identify what will be taught in the video and what problems/actions can be solved/done after the lesson. Once the purpose is stated, write down a learning outline to reach the goal. Tip for a practical video-based lesson is to keep the structure as uncomplicated as possible. A straightforward outline is easier to remember, and at the same time, saves the producing cost.

2. Feature captivating animation

Moving on to the creation of the video, many trainers often make the mistake of putting too much text on the video. This will be a big waste when you can not get use of the best advantage of video learning: powerful visual. At this point, animation is highly recommended. With today advanced technology, animation can deliver any type of content (text, analytics, illustration,etc..) in a stunning visual. Got a long list of steps to follow? Summarize it and put them into a timeline with graphic illustration. Too much data and number can cause boredom? Don’t worry as you can now convey them through vivid animated chart. In addition, when working with the studio, you are freely to choose a suitable animation concept for your targeted learners. Whether they are elementary students or business owners, there’s always an ideal visual style to attract them.

3. Make use of voice over

As video-based learning is different from the traditional method of training, it is important that your video-based learning module includes voice over. Sound and image makes a perfect combination. Cut down the amount of text in the video and convey them through a convincing voiceover. Just keep the most essential text and content on the screen. Then let the voiceover do the supporting job. While a high and cheerful lady voice will have a good effect on kids, adults prefer a compassionate, warmer narration. And don’t forget to prepare a transcript for the audio in the video. It will be helpful in the next tip.

Firstly, including caption in your learning video allows the learners with hearing disability to study easily. Secondly, in case not all your learners have English (or other language) as their mother tongue, then transcript is a big help when they can not catch up with some narration. But don’t let the caption steal the attention away from the main illustration and text on the screen. Use it wisely as a supporting tool only.

5. Keep it short and straightforward

People may be interested in the videos but just when they are not too long. A lengthy videos can cause boredom and make viewers distracted from the learning. Hence, keep your videos as short as possible. If you notice, the most viewed and trending videos on Youtube are often between 3-5 minutes. This rule can also be applied for your lesson. For instance, a 20 minute course should be divided into 4-6 short videos instead of two 10 minute-clips. There are also other benefits from keeping the video short. Decrease the length of the videos is one practical way to reduce the cost for your project. For eLearning organization, shorter videos are also better for the loading speed of the course.

6. Screen record and sharing

If your lessons include practical application, then screen record is a good choice to give your audiences a better picture of the work. For example, you can pre-record how to set up a computer network and show it during the course. There are various tools that allow you to record your screen, such as Camtasia or Screenr. In case your training involves interaction between trainers/teachers and the learners, screen sharing is another option. Screen sharing allows the participants to observe the live actions/example from the trainer.
